MPS FINAL SEMESTER CAREER AND MANAGEMENT COURSE OPTIONS

Students who participate in our Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Fashion Merchandising and Retail Management, Fashion Marketing, and Visual Merchandising degree programs have the option of completing either a 3-credit management course (Influencing in Organizations) or a 3-credit internship course that includes an in-class component and an industry internship.  Students have the option of taking one of these courses during the final semester of their program.

The 3-credit internship experience is coupled with a class. This class is designed to be an assessment of the types of jobs available in the corporate and store environments while the student interns within the fashion and related industries. The course also addresses professional development topics in order to not only enhance the students' competitiveness in the work world but also to increase their levels of self-efficacy in seeking out post-graduation employment opportunities.

The management course, Influencing in Organizations, helps students develop influencing skills that are important to succeed in nearly all work settings. The skills that are emphasized in this course include receiving effective feedback, making persuasive presentations, influencing others, and managing negotiations. Based upon a student’s existing work experience(s), this course will provide students with an opportunity to explore their effectiveness in a team and individual contributor roles.  The course is experiential and provides many opportunities for students to observe, analyze, and practice their influencing skills through participation in role plays and other skills-development exercises.

Students also have the option of completing a 1-credit career exploration internship in either their first and/or second semesters.  If interested, students are able to complete two 1-credit internships.  The 1-credit internship is an optional component of the program.  Typically, students take the 1-credit internship because they wish to receive additional industry experience during their time at LIM College.
