Earlier this year, the students participated in a program that challenged students in colleges across the US to increase the visibility of cotton sustainability. Sustainable fashion is an area of focus at LIM, so when this opportunity arose, teams of students took on the challenge to create a “Cotton Speaks” Blackboard VoiceThread video for the LIM community.
The teams received guidance from Fashion Merchandising faculty member Hilda Alfonso and department chair Nancy Miller as they developed their proposals. Then the students devoted a whole day to creating a video, filming in multiple locations throughout New York City.
Their hard work paid off. The winning team earned $1500 in scholarship funds and the second-place finisher received $1000.
“We’ll have the knowledge that we gained from creating these videos when we begin our careers,” said senior Baylen Edwards-Miller, a member of the first-place team. “Plus, this scholarship helps to take a burden off of our senior year. It’s a win-win.”
Added Professor Miller, “This type of competition provides a resume-building experience, which is just wonderful for our students.”
Funding for this project was awarded through a competitive grant presented to LIM College by the Importer Support Program of the Cotton Board and Cotton Incorporated.
