How to Survive Early Morning Classes

I was very lucky my freshman year to never have an 8 am class. Currently, I have an 8 am which means I must leave my apartment around 7:15 am.

Morning

Here are a few tips that help me make early classes a little less painful.

1. Drink coffee/eat breakfast

Starting your day with a healthy breakfast is key. I recommend making oatmeal, a smoothie, or a bowl of cereal. Eating will also wake your body up and fuel you throughout the day.

Normally after my class or midday, I will grab coffee because that is when I start to get tired. Coffee will become your best friend in college. I am not a big coffee fan but, on the days, I need it, I drink it.

2. Prepare everything the night before

To get an extra 10 minutes of sleep in the morning, I like to prep everything I need in the morning during the night before. I will shower at night, so I do not have to wake up early to shower. I pack my lunch the night before and pick out an outfit before bed. I also have my school bag ready to go with my planner, laptop, and notebooks all in my bag.

3. Set multiple alarms

I recommend setting 2 alarms just in case you “accidentally” snooze the first one. I also set an alarm for when I must leave to get on the train. Whatever helps you get to class and get out the door.

4. Try to go to sleep early

For college students, this is hard. Especially if you have class and a job you might be coming home late and will have homework to complete. Time management is something students should learn. It will take time figuring out the best schedule for you, but I know I function the best when I have had 7-8 hours of sleep. I do not stay up late doing homework because I set time aside during my days off to get everything done.

Try not to think negatively about your early class. At the end of the day, you are getting an education to better yourself and start your career after college. Go after it, get up and start your day!
