Career Goal: Social Impact Startup Owner
Ashley is in LIM’s master’s degree program in Fashion Merchandising and Retail Management.
Why did you choose LIM for your master's degree?
After studying marketing for four years at Cabrini University, I realized fashion was the field I wanted to pursue. I chose LIM because I knew it had a fantastic fashion program. During my junior year of high school, I had participated in LIM's Summer Fashion Lab, where I got first-hand experience with the campus and professors.
What do you like best about your master's program?
I love how hands-on it is. A lot of my classes involve going out into the industry. As part of my Visual Merchandising class, we attended the NY NOW Winter Market at the Javits Center. It was amazing to gain experience at a trade show. Also, LIM has many great resources and connections. The professors are knowledgeable and caring—I’ve connected with them all on LinkedIn. I feel like a person, not a number.
How is LIM helping you work toward your career goals?
My classes have helped me realize my passion for visual merchandising and connecting with customers in-store. Also, LIM's Career Services are phenomenal! All the Career Coaches know me by name, and they help me tremendously with my career search. My ultimate career goal is to start a business that inspires and empowers young women of color.
What was your transition to online learning like during COVID-19?
Transitioning to remote learning was a challenge because I’m such an interactive person. But all my professors have done a great job of making the classes very interactive using Zoom. Still being able to see my professor and classmates’ faces makes online learning much better. We give presentations via Zoom—so as an added bonus, my technology skills are improving!
What advice would you give someone who's considering a graduate program at LIM?
If you are passionate about the fashion industry, take the step and apply. It’s an excellent investment for you and your career.
